‘I want to see that with him’- American sprint icon reveals key to Trayvon Bromell’s lethal comeback

Th 2004 Olympic 100m champion believes Trayvon Bromell has what it takes to make a strong comeback and silence Noah Lyles and Co if he focuses on the right adjustments.

American sprint icon Justin Gatlin has advised Trayvon Bromell on what he needs to do to be lethal in his comeback journey.

Bromell was out of competition for the better part of the 2024 season but has just resumed action, competing in three indoor races so far.

The former world indoor champion opened his season at the Texas Tech Corky Classic where he won the race before finishing fifth at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix.

At the Millrose Games, Trayvon Bromell finished second and, in an interview, he revealed that the focus now shifts to the US Championships.

Speaking about Trayvon Bromell’s potential, Justin Gatlin explained that he only needs to work on his physique and go back to the times when he would run under 10 seconds effortlessly.

Gatlin revealed that it is a physique that many sprinters have embraced including but not limited to Noah Lyles, Gail Devers, Allyson Felix, Julien Alfred and Asafa Powell.

“What I want to see from him, it doesn’t have to be today, or tomorrow, is the fact of him getting ready for his outdoor season,” Justin Gatlin said on the Ready Set Go podcast.

“The hallmark and the calling card for elite sprinters when they’re in their prime is big shoulder caps and we’ve seen Trayvon with big shoulder caps when he was running the 9.7s and 9.8s like we’re going out of business it was the fact of he had bigger shoulder caps.

“It helped him kind of move down the track better. This is going to dictate how fast you’re moving, how fast you’re getting down the track. I want to see that with Trayvon, he is progressively getting better.

“It’s still in there, he can get it, pull it out and by the time he gets outdoors, I think he’ll be surprising a lot of people.”

Justin Gatlin’s co-host Rodney Green also pointed out that Trayvon Bromell is slowly coming out and he will be looking to win races when it matters.

Green admitted that watching Trayvon Bromell reminds him of Justin Gatlin in 2012 when he was not a contender for a medal at the World Indoor Championships and he went on to claim the gold medal.

He analysed the race at the Millrose Games and pointed out that Bromell is slowly gathering pace and will be the one to watch at the World Indoor Championships.

“I watched Trayvon’s race, Marcellus had a really great start and controlled the race from beginning to end,” Green shared.

“Trayvon tried to get him and I feel like he is starting to get into the rhythm and he is going to be one of those guys who don’t have to win at all until he has to win at all.

“I kind of mirror that of your 2012 performance indoor run. You didn’t win any of those races but when it was time for you to win, you won.”

Justin Gatlin continues believing that Trayvon Bromell has the potential to return to his peak form by focusing on his physique, while Rodney Green sees him steadily building momentum for major championships. With the outdoor season ahead, Bromell remains a strong contender to surprise the world.
