After a strong start to the season, the world 200m silver medallist downplayed the importance of indoor races, emphasising his focus on making the World Championships team and chasing gold in Tokyo.
Following a very long 2024 season, Erriyon Knighton is back in the grind like he never left already competing in his first 200m of the season.
The American sprinter was on the verge of being banned by the Athletics Integrity Unit after testing positive for a low level of trenbolone during an out-of-competition test.
However, an independent arbitrator ruled in his favour, noting that he might have consumed the banned substance unknowingly after eating some contaminated meat.

Erriyon Knighton managed to make it to the Paris Olympic Games but following all the things that had transpired at the start of the season, he missed out on a podium place in the 200m final. He finished fourth in the race won by Letsile Tebogo.
He has since started preparations ahead of the long season where he intends to make up for all the time wasted in 2024 when he was serving his suspension.

Knighton made his 60m debut at the Legends of Alachua County Invitational where he won the race before competing in the 200m at the Meeting Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais Trophée EDF where he continued the winning streak.

However, despite the impressive indoor races, Erriyon Knighton has declared that he is unbothered about that and the main focus will be on making the team to the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
“This is my first real race of the season. I am not really disappointed with the time. I came for the win and that’s what it was all about,” Erriyon Knighton said after the race.
“I have run some 60 metres this year, but that wasn’t really the focus. I just want to stay healthy and get better. Indoor is not important to me and this was it for me this season. My focus is on making the team for the World Outdoor Championships.”
He has been consistent at the World Championships and in Tokyo, Erriyon Knighton hopes to go one step better and hopefully get a gold medal in the 200m.
In 2022, competing on home soil, Knighton won a bronze medal and in 2023 in Budapest, Hungary, he stepped up to win a silver.
