Several people were injured Thursday after a car drove a group of people in the southern German city of Munich, police said.

Bild newspaper reported that 15 people were injured.

The Munich Security Conference is due to start on Friday with US Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arriving later on Thursday.

A major police operation is underway near the city’s central train station and officers are working to establish what has happened, a spokesperson said, giving no further details.

Driver detained

Police detained the driver and did not consider him to pose a further threat, the force said on X.

The people who were hit by the car were taking part in a demonstration linked to a strike organized by the Verdi union, according to the local BR broadcaster. The union said it had no further information on the incident.

One eyewitness recalled police shooting at the car after they joined the demonstration line.

“I saw that a man was lying underneath the car,” the eyewitness told German program BR24.

“Then I tried to open the door, but it was locked.”

Eventually, the eyewitness retreated and turned to those injured, BR24 reported.
