Kakamega – one family in Matungu, Kakamega County, has been fined Ksh 1.5 million after the funeral of their father, chief chief Agostino Odongo, plunged into chaos, causing serious property damage.

The funeral is disrupted in Kakamega after politicians intervened

The funeral, which had previously begun calmly, went into a state of violence after politicians arrived and allegedly disbanded the event.

Troubles intensified when Governor Ferdinand Barasa arrived with his supporters singing cultural songs that put mourners in a state of anxiety.

The situation deteriorated after supporters of former cabinet minister Rashid Echesa and local MP Peter Nabulindo joined, causing serious violence.

In the violence, the tents were demolished, the seats were thrown on each side, and the efforts of the religious leaders to restore stability hit the rock.

As a result of the chaos, the family was forced to leave the body of the deceased, without being able to continue the funeral as planned.

The consequences of funeral violence in Kakamega

After the incident, the Shan Events Company, which issued the equipment, made compensation claims to the family, demanding that they pay for the cost of damage within two weeks, otherwise legal action would be taken.

Damaged devices include:

✅ Eight LED screens worth KSh 640,000

✅ Four speakers worth Ksh 320,000

✅ Micharphone one worth of KSh 150,000

✅ Red VIP seats worth 160,000 KSh

Shan Events also blamed the family for failing to provide adequate protection at the funeral.

“According to the terms of our agreement, you as the organizers of the occasion were responsible for ensuring a safe environment for our services. Your failure to keep safety measures caused these losses,” Said Shan Events.

Patrick Lutta, his late son, cursed the perpetrators of the violence, explaining that they were his father's close friends.

“Our father was a peaceful man and these two leaders knew him. Echesa was a friend of our father. Peter Nabulindo was also a friend of our father, and even advised him during the election. For them to come and disrupt his funeral it is very sad,” Said Lutta.

The family is struggling not only with the sadness of losing their loved one but also the financial burden of the loss caused by the chaos. This event remains a lesson on the effects of politics to interfere with personal festivals.
