Faith Kipyegon’s top competitor targets world record in season opener as revenge looms

Faith Kipyegon’s top rival is set to open her season with a world record attempt, seeking redemption after a disappointing 2024.

Faith Kipyegon’s serial track rival will open her season at the Meeting Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais Trophee EDF, a World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting in Lievin scheduled for Thursday, February 13.

Gudaf Tsegay had a rough 2024 season and she is hoping to have a great start to 2025, with all eyes fixed on the 2025 World Championships where she intends to make up for all the losses she endured at the Olympics.

She became a hot topic following the controversial 5000m race that saw Faith Kipyegon get disqualified for some time before her silver medal was reinstated.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce has revealed what has been keeping her grounded in her athletics career despite being ‘old’.

In the race, she finished a distant ninth before finishing a poor 12th in the 1500m. She tried her luck in the 10,000m but nothing worked as she also missed out on a podium place, finishing sixth.

She ended her season unexpectedly with the 1500m race at Alexis Ohanian’s women-only meet, Athlos where she finished fourth in the race won by Faith Kipyegon.

Now she eyes a stronger comeback with revenge in her quest and her first assignment is to shatter the 3000m world record in Lievin.

Last year, she clocked an impressive 8:17.11 to cross the finish line, just half a second slower than the world record. The Ethiopian distance sensation believes she has all it takes to shatter the record and she will go for it once and for all.

Her quest for top honours and a world record will not be a walk in the park. Tsegay lines up against a strong field comprising world indoor 1500m champion Freweyni Hailu, Nadia Battocletti and another Ethiopian Birke Haylom.

Hailu broke Hellen Obiri’s 3000m meeting record in Ostrava earlier this month and set a world-leading time of 8:24.17 and of course, her main aim will be to continue the hot streak.

‘Some fixing has to go on’ - Usain Bolt on how he plans to recover his lost millions as he slams ‘sleeping’ Jamaican government

Frustrated Usain Bolt has opened up over how he plans to fix his country Jamaica to recover the nearly $13 million that he lost from an investment scheme two years ago.

After winning the silver in the 10,000m at the Paris Olympic Games, Battocletti has enough confidence to challenge Tsegay and her Ethiopian compatriots.

She was off to a winning start to her season with a stunning performance at the 68° Campaccio-International Cross Country.

As her serial rival starts her season, Faith Kipyegon should be on the look out to see what is in store for her in this long 2025.
