Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno has been relegated to serve as assistant to newly appointed Gor Mahia coach Sinisa Mihic.
Gor Mahia assistant coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno has once again been relegated to second fiddle following the appointment of Croatian tactician Sinisa Mihic as the club’s new head coach.
This comes just weeks after Otieno had a taste of the top job following the dismissal of former Brazilian coach Leonardo Neiva.
Neiva was let go after a string of poor performances that saw fans demand his removal. The club, responding to the outcry, parted ways with the Brazilian just months into his tenure.
Zico was a man relieved after Gor Mahia dramatically overcame Posta Rangers in stoppage time to avoid the wrath of angered fans on Saturday.
This turn of events worked in favor of Otieno, who was elevated to the position of interim head coach.
Under his leadership, the Harambee Stars tactician managed to somewhat stabilize the team, prompting Gor Mahia’s management to announce that he would remain in charge until the end of the season.
The club also hinted that if he met expectations, he could be considered for the permanent role.

“As of now, we are not hiring a new head coach. We are convinced that our interim coach Zedekiah Otieno is doing well with the team,’’ said Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier via Citizen Digital while Otieno was away with the national side at the Mapinduzi Cup in January.
“We have decided to give the interim coaches time. Come the end of the season, we shall gauge their performance before making a decision. But if they meet our expectations, we will surely not need a foreign coach,” he added.
However, in a sudden twist, February saw Otieno return to his former position as assistant coach with Mihic’s appointment.

Five things we learnt from matchweek 20 of the 2024/2025 FKFPL season, including Levis Opiyo’s turnaround for AFC Leopards.
Despite this shift, the duo kicked off Mihic’s tenure on a high note, securing a 2-1 victory over Mathare United at Dandora Stadium on Saturday.
That said, Mihic’s future at the club is not guaranteed either, as he is also on a six-month trial period.
His performance will be assessed at the end of the season before a final decision is made regarding his long-term future at Gor Mahia.
The victory over Mathare United took Gor Mahia’s points tally to 34, placing them four points behind joint league leaders Kenya Police and Tusker, both tied at 38 points.
Next on the fixture list is a crucial top-of-the-table clash against Tusker on Sunday—a game that could significantly influence the title race.
