‘Jamaicans wanted her to back it up’ – Usain Bolt on how Sha’Carri Richardson ignited track & field feud

Sprint legends opens up on the origin of Sha’Carri Richardson’s rivalry with Jamaican sprint queens.

Eight-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt has a legacy that will take centuries to march.

His sprinting exploits, blistering pace, record-breaking heroics and a nuck for medals, leaves him one of the most cherished sprinters of all time.

His choice of words, pre-race theatrics and chest-thumping sentiments have been solely missed since the 11-time world champion hung up his spikes in 2017.

How has Noah Lyles evolved into the best sprinters, taking over the mantle from Usain Bolt?

Even though the debate with Noah Lyles regarding the greatest sprinters and fastest man continues to evoke mixed reactions, comparisons with Australian teen sensation Gout Gout is only getting started.

However, it was in 2021 when the three-time Olympic 100m champion spilt the beans regarding the origin of the rivalry pitting Sha’Carri Richardson and the sprint-mad Jamaican talent of Shelly-Ann Frase-Pryce, Shericka Jackson and Co.

Making her return after the ban, Richardson finished last in the 100m dash at the Nike Prefontaine Classics in 2021 despite being confident ahead of the race after posting a meme ‘I took some time off to rest and now it’s game time, b****es. You have no idea!’

This attitude left Bolt and his fellow athletes from Jamaica thoroughly unimpressed, and they were spurred on to beat her. Bolt said her behavior is part of the reason there’s bad blood between Richardson and Jamaican women sprinters.

“Jamaicans were vexed because she was talking a lot of s*** before the actual race, it is just one of those things,” Bolt told the Daily Mail.

“Jamaicans don’t like when people talk s*** about us because we are a very proud people. So if you talk about us we are gonna want you to back it up. It definitely gave those women the extra push to win.”
