Julius Masaba on how difficult it has become breaking into ‘competitive’ AFC Leopards starting line-up

Julius Masaba has explained how difficult it has become to break into the competitive AFC Leopards starting line-up ever since moving from Kariobangi Sharks last August.

Julius Masaba has had to embrace patience since joining AFC Leopards from Kariobangi Sharks at the tail end of last season. The winger, who was a regular starter at Sharks, has found playing time hard to come by at Ingwe due to the competition for places in the squad.

However, he has made the most of his recent opportunities, starting in each of AFC Leopards’ last two matches and scoring a crucial goal in their 1-1 draw against Murang’a Seal.

His chance came unexpectedly after an unfortunate injury sidelined Ovella Ochieng a fortnight ago.

The hard-working midfielder was heavily linked with a move to sworn rivals Gor Mahia but chose to extend his contract at the club.

Masaba’s attacking runs have been a notable asset for Ingwe, with his well-timed movements towards the back post catching defenders off guard. His flair was on full display against Nairobi City Stars when he attempted a cheeky rabona that almost caught goalkeeper Edwin Mulokwe by surprise in their 1-0 victory.

Speaking to Pulse Sports after the draw against Murang’a Seal, Masaba admitted that playing for AFC Leopards comes with significantly more pressure than his previous club, especially due to the team’s long title drought.

“This team wants to win the league. We have not won it in 26 years, so the pressure is significantly higher than playing at Sharks,” Masaba said.

The former Ligi Ndogo player also revealed how the uncertainty of playing time has tested his patience but credited his coaches for helping him stay prepared.

“The pressure here (AFC Leopards) is high. The demands are also higher as compared to Sharks. From the fans, media, management and everything, it’s all pressure because we are a big team that wants to win the league after over two decades,” he explained.

Masaba added that he was only informed on matchday that he would start against Murang’a Seal, highlighting how he has had to stay ready for his chance.

“The coaches ran me through what was expected of me in the game. Throughout the week, I didn’t know I would play this match, I was just informed in the morning and I thank them for the opportunity.”

Despite the challenge of limited minutes, Masaba remains focused on improving and making an impact when given the chance.

“It is hard (playing less minutes) but it calls for patience. I also have excellent coaches here who talk to me and explain the areas that I need to improve in when my chance comes. I am glad I utilized my chance well.”

Looking ahead, Masaba hopes to earn a spot in Kenya’s African Nations Championship (CHAN) squad for the tournament scheduled for August 2025.

“If I get minutes and play well, I will help the team and maybe impress the national team coaches and make it to the CHAN Squad. It all depends on the minutes I get,” he concluded.

With his recent performances, Masaba is proving to be a valuable asset for AFC Leopards, and should he continue on this trajectory, he may find himself not only cementing a starting role but also catching the attention of the national team selectors.
