‘I don’t want to be imprisoned’- Gabby Thomas reveals how she plans to reinvent herself

Gabby Thomas is gearing up for an action packed season after a stellar 2024 campaign.

Olympic champion Gabby Thomas is making bold changes as she gears up for an intense 2025 campaign.

The five-time Olympic medalist, who had a stellar 2024 season, is taking a reflective approach to maintain her dominance on the track.

Coming off a triumphant performance at the Paris Olympics, where she clinched three gold medals in the 200m, 4x100m, and 4x400m, Thomas is determined to replicate her success.

However, she believes that success starts from within, and she is making intentional lifestyle adjustments to ensure she is at her best physically and mentally.

Julien Alfred has revealed how life has changed since her Olympics triumph, joining Noah Lyles and Gabby Thomas in raising concerns about safety and increased public attention.

In a recent interview with Cosmopolitan, Thomas shared some of the habits she is leaving behind to step into an even stronger version of herself.

One of the biggest shifts Thomas is embracing is her natural beauty, particularly when it comes to her hair.

“Oooh, I like that. My first out is fighting my hair. I’m embracing natural beauty and gonna let it do what it does,” she revealed.

She expanded on this, acknowledging the pressures that Black female athletes often face regarding appearance.

Olympic champion Gabby Thomas is relieved after a potential breakthrough in alleged airport stalking incident.

“As a female athlete, and especially as a Black female athlete, you have to look a certain way or else you’re susceptible to a lot of criticism, and it almost always comes back to how our hair looks. I’m so cognizant of that, and I’m in a space now where I don’t want to be imprisoned by that mentality,” she explained.

“I’ll be so stressed out before a race thinking, Oh my god, my hair is not gonna be perfect. People are gonna say something on the internet. I’ll be straightening it or trying to slick it back. When I go run, I don’t want to worry about if my edges are done, if my hair is straight, or about my marketability because I’m choosing to just exist as I am.”

In addition to embracing her natural beauty, Thomas is also cutting out energy drinks and avoiding overextending herself.

“That’s out,” she stated plainly, recognizing that constantly pushing herself too hard can lead to burnout.

The American sprint queen has revealed when and where her first race will be, putting rivals Shericka Jackson and Elain Thompson-Herah on alert.

“For the last one, I would say more skincare and general beauty regimen. I want to really take care of myself in that way. I’ve been less focused on that, and 2025 is the year to blossom into everything I want to be.”

Thomas’s renewed focus will be put to the test as she tackles a demanding schedule in 2025.
