Newly appointed Gor Mahia head coach Sinisa Mihic has hit the ground running ahead of first game in charge.
Gor Mahia’s new head coach, Sinisa Mihic, has wasted no time in getting to work as he looks to turn around the defending champions’ season.
The Croatian tactician who was appointed on February 3 met with the entire technical bench on Tuesday to outline his vision and strategy for the team.
Mihic acknowledges the challenges of joining the team mid-season rather than from preseason but remains unfazed by the task ahead.
“No problem. I’m here, I accept this offer, this challenge. For me, it doesn’t matter,” Mihic stated in an exclusive interview with Citizen TV.
Gor Mahia defender Alphonce Omija has opened up on the unusual way he received his first call-up for the national team Harambee Stars.
The Croat emphasized that understanding his squad’s strengths and weaknesses will take some time, but he is confident in his ability to make an impact.
“Sometimes, it depends on the quality of the players. A coach needs two to three weeks with a team to truly understand them and identify areas for tactical improvement.”
Having followed Gor Mahia closely before taking over, Mihic already has a clear idea of what needs to be adjusted.
“There are some tactical aspects we can improve—coordination between the lines, spacing, and attacking rhythm. We can’t always play at the same pace; we need to vary it,” he explained.
Gor Mahia official Dolphina Odhiambo insists the money wired by Sindiga Big Stars last November for the failed transfer of Ronney Onyango did not go through her office.
His approach will be to prepare the team based on their upcoming opponents while maintaining flexibility in strategy.
With Gor Mahia boasting one of the largest fanbases in Kenyan football, Mihic has promised to deliver entertaining yet effective football.
“We’ll play simple but effective football, with smooth transitions. There are many ways to be successful,” he noted.
Despite the high expectations and pressure surrounding the club, Mihic remains committed to implementing his football philosophy one game at a time.
“Honestly, today’s training showed me that this team has a lot of potential. We have good players, and we can be even better,” he said.
The tactician also urged the fans to remain patient and continue supporting the team, even when performances might not immediately meet expectations.
“We need energy from them. They need to believe in us. We may be third in the table now, but we are on the right path,” Mihic reassured.
The Croat will be assisted by Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno, who previously served as interim head coach after the departure of Brazilian tactician Leo Neiva in 2024.
Alphonce Omija’s last gasp goal salvaged all three points for Gor Mahia in the dying minutes just as Posta Rangers thought they would be taking at least a point home.
Zico led Gor Mahia to their current third-place position, six points behind joint leaders Kenya Police FC and Tusker FC in the FKF Premier League (FKFPL) standings.
This weekend’s fixtures could prove crucial in the title race, with the top two sides facing off on Saturday while Gor Mahia travel to face Mathare United in Mihic’s first game in charge.
