Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi to make season debut this weekend

Emmanuel Wanyonyi is set to kick off his 2025 season this weekend as he eyes a successful year including a shot at the world title in Tokyo.

Reigning Olympic 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi is gearing up for a thrilling season opener at the Athletics Kenya Cross Country Championships scheduled for Saturday at the Eldoret Sports Club in Uasin Gishu County.

The world 800m silver medallist is hopeful of having a great start to his long season as he looks to accomplish a series of things including winning the world title at the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi explained that his preparations have been going well and he is ready for the challenge, revealing that the cross country is part of his training as he looks forward to kickstarting his track season. This season, his main focus will be on competing in several Diamond League meetings.


Faith Kipyegon, Letsile Tebogo and Algerian boxer Imane Khelif will be honoured at a prestigious event in Algiers in March.


“At the moment, I’m not sure about my calendar because I’m still training but once my body feels great, then I’m sure I will compete in a number of races,” Emmanuel Wanyonyi said in an interview with Daily Sport.

“I shall compete in the Diamond League Meetings and then also the main event, the Tokyo World Championships.

“I will be competing at the national cross-country championships mainly for training because we are just building up at the moment. I can’t compare how my season because I’m yet to know where my body is.”

Last season, Emmanuel Wanyonyi enjoyed a stellar season, starting with the road mile world record at the Adizero Road to Records.

After several races, Emmanuel Wanyonyi competed at the National Olympic trials where he claimed top honours in the 800m, clocking 1:41.70 to cross the finish line.

He then went on to compete at the Diamond League Meeting in Paris where he finished second in a personal best time of 1:41.58, before heading to the Paris Olympic Games.

Wanyonyi won the Olympic Games in a time of 1:41.19 before clocking the second-fastest time in history in the 800m, clocking 1:41.11 to win the race at the Diamond League Meeting in Lausanne.

Wanyonyi rounded up his season with a win at the Diamond League Meeting final in Brussels, clocking 1:42.70 to cross the finish line. He hopes for a better 2025 season.
