Olympic 100m champion Julien Alfred has dismissed comparisons with her training partner Dina Asher-Smith, noting that they are gifted differently.
Olympic 100m champion Julien Alfred has calmed the comparisons between herself and training partner Dina Asher-Smith.
Ahead of the 300m showdown at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix that happened on Sunday, Julien Alfred was asked about who she thinks would carry the day in the longer distance in a press conference.
The world indoor 60m champion revealed that whoever has better legs and executes nicely would be the one to win the race and between them, there is no great runner in the longer distances.
Olympic champion Gabby Thomas is relieved after a potential breakthrough in alleged airport stalking incident.
Julien Alfred went on to claim top honours in the race ahead of Dina Asher-Smith who came in second.
Alfred clocked 36.16 seconds to cross the finish line ahead of her training partner who came in second in a time of 36.87. Frenchwoman Emma Montoya rounded up the podium in a time of 38.37.
“I mean, we are both great athletes, to be honest, and it’s whoever wants it more on the day and whoever just executes the best, I can’t really see who has the edge over each other,” Julien Alfred said in a pre-race press conference ahead of the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix.
Last season, Julien Alfred who has been training under coach Edrick Floreal since she was 17 had a stellar season, unlike her training partner who was making a lot of changes in her career.
Alfred had her season off to a winning start at the World Indoor Championships before heading outdoors where she made a name for herself.
Her Olympic campaign was nothing short of spectacular as she started with a win in the 100m, beating favourite Sha’Carri Richardson to second place and also went on to claim silver in the 200m behind Gabby Thomas.
Once Kenya’s shining athletic talent, Alice Aprot Nawowuna has now faced a life changing moment, leaving many to wonder where her once-brilliant future has gone.
On her part, Dina Asher-Smith made significant changes in her life last season. She relocated to Austin, Texas to train with Edrick Floreal after ending her 19-year partnership with her childhood coach, John Blackie.
At the Olympics, she failed to make the final in the women’s 100m and narrowly missed out on the podium, finishing fourth in the women’s 200m.
However, she had a reason to celebrate as she was part of Great Britain’s 4x100m relay team that claimed a silver medal.
This season, after getting used to the environment in Texas and having gotten used to her coach, she hopes to go one place better at the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
