‘I can’t let it go’- Mary Moraa sends strong message to Athing Mu, Keely Hodgkinson ahead of long season

Mary Moraa is ready to defend her 800m World Championship title in 2025, facing fierce rivals Keely Hodgkinson, Athing Mu, and more—she’s putting in the work to bring home the gold!

Reigning world 800m champion Mary Moraa is not leaving anything to chance as she eyes redemption against Keely Hodgkinson, Athing Mu and Co this season.

Mary Moraa has all the pressure to defend her world title and the good thing is that she is aware of what she needs to do to ensure she attains the target.

The Olympic 800m bronze medallist has to get past the reigning Olympic champion and former world champion to claim the gold medal and she is confident about attaining the goal, especially after the mixed 2024 season.

Jamaican sprint legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce will head to the United States to promote her latest venture as she begins to prepare for life beyond track.

She has expressed confidence about defending the title that she won at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, since the global showpiece in Tokyo, Japan is the major event of the season.

In Budapest, Mary Moraa clocked an impressive personal best time of 1:56.03 ahead of Keely Hodgkinson and Athing Mu who finished second and third in respective times of 1:56.34 and 1:56.61.

“This season, there is still much to do. I Mary Moraa I’m the defending world champion and I must put in the extra effort. That which I brought for my country in 2023, I have to grab it and bring it again, I can’t let it go,” Moraa said in an interview with KBC Sport.

“In 2023 I won the World Championships gold medal and I have to start asking myself what I want to do this season. That is the main event and that is my big target for this season because I’m going to defend it.”

The former world 800m bronze medallist disclosed that serious training has yet to start since she will not be competing in any indoor races.

Moraa admitted that she can’t tell how her body is at the moment but when the right time comes, she will inform her fans of her progress.

Gout Gout has overcome identity challenges and personal struggles to break records but who are the people behind his success?

“For now, we have been doing roading and maybe next week we shall start speed work. Those who have started indoor racing have already started competing,” Moraa said.

“I’m not competing indoors and I have my targets but for now, I can’t say that my body is okay. When that time comes, I’ll tell the world how my body is.”

Meanwhile, lining up against her stark rivals will not be an easy outing for her considering they are all strong and will be fighting for top honours.

Keely Hodgkinson, after two editions of winning silver medals in the 800m, will be out to try her luck and claim a gold medal. She won silver at both the 2022 and 2023 editions of the World Championships.

On her part, Athing Mu hopes to reclaim the title that she won in 2022. In 2023, she finished third behind Keely and Mary Moraa.

Athing Mu also missed the Paris Olympic Games after a devastating fall at the US Olympic Games and she will be seeking redemption after such a tough season.
