A round up of Kenya Cup action after matchday seven as KCB subject Kenya Harlequin to third straight loss, while Kabras Sugar overcome Blackblad.
Kenya Cup’s Gameweek 7 delivered thrilling action as league leaders Kabras Sugar and second-placed KCB Rugby maintained their dominance with emphatic victories.
Kabras Sugar dismantled Black Blad 62-6 at Kakamega Showground, while KCB overcame Kenya Harlequin 38-16 at KCB Sports Club to keep up the pressure at the top. Here is a recap of action from matchweek seven.
Romania-based duo of Ian Njenga and Cornelius Mokoro have been included as Jerome Paarwater has named his first provisional squad of 47 players for 2025 ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup qualifiers.
Kabras Sugar 62-6 Black Blad
Kabras RFC continued their fine form with a commanding win over Black Blad, marking their 14th straight victory over the university side since Blad’s promotion to the top tier. The defending champions were in ruthless form, crossing the whitewash ten times to maintain their perfect record this season.
Locks Patrick Sabatia and Hillary Odhiambo were instrumental, each bagging a brace in a dominant display. Kabras set the tone early, with Odhiambo finishing off a forward-driven move in the left corner before Jone Kubu slotted in the conversion. Sabatia followed soon after, slicing through Blad’s defense for the second try, though Kubu’s conversion attempt fell short.
Blak Blad attempted to respond through Derrick Masese’s dazzling footwork, which earned them a penalty that was successfully converted for a 12-3 score. However, the visitors struggled to contain Kabras’ relentless attack. Jeanson Misoga powered over from a scrum, while Ephraim Oduor’s centre-post try secured a first-half bonus point as Kabras led 26-6 at the break.
The second half saw Kabras extend their dominance, with Sabatia, Collins Indeche, Barry Robinson, William Mwanji, Mathias Odhiambo, and captain George Nyambua all getting on the scoresheet. Even a sin-bin for Odhiambo did not slow down the rampant hosts, who capped off an emphatic 62-6 victory.
Mokoro is the fourth Kenyan to have dumped Kenya Cup rugby to pursue greener pastures in Romania, and all it took was one game for Quins against Mwamba in late 2023 for the opportunity to pop up.
KCB 38-16 Kenya Harlequin
At KCB Sports Club, the Bankers secured their seventh consecutive win, dispatching Kenya Harlequin 38-16. The result keeps KCB hot on the heels of league leaders Kabras RFC.
Quins had a promising start, with Ervin Asena converting a ninth-minute penalty for a 3-0 lead. However, KCB responded with back-to-back tries, as flanker Elvis Olukusi and Michael Wamalwa crossed the whitewash to establish a 12-3 advantage. Asena kept Quins in touch with another penalty, but KCB’s Andy Cole Omolo struck before halftime to send the hosts into the break with a 19-6 cushion.
Veteran Davis Chenge further extended KCB’s lead early in the second half, with a converted try making it 26-6. Quins showed some fight, with Charles Kinyanjui touching down to momentarily reduce the deficit. However, KCB were in no mood for a comeback, with Olukusi grabbing his second try before Austin Sikutwa also got on the scoresheet. Although Billy Aboum managed a late consolation for Quins, it was too little, too late as KCB wrapped up a convincing 38-16 win.
