January 2025 has proven to be a devastating month for aviation, with at least six deadly crashes across the globe, claiming the lives of over 100 individuals.
Among these tragedies, two incidents occurred in Kenya, underscoring the continued dangers faced by aviation professionals and passengers worldwide.
USA
The most recent of these incidents took place on January 30, 2025, when a midair collision between an Army helicopter and an American Airlines regional jet near Washington, D.C., resulted in the deaths of all 67 people aboard.
The American Airlines jet, which was attempting to land at Ronald Reagan National Airport, collided with the military helicopter, sending both aircraft plunging into the icy Potomac River.
The accident, which occurred in some of the most tightly monitored airspace in the world, led to an immediate shift from rescue operations to recovery efforts.
Kenya
Earlier the same day, a Cessna 185, registered 5Y-BVL, crashed at Kedong Ranch near Naivasha on Thursday evening, January 30, 2025, at around 5:14 pm.
The aircraft, which had departed from Wilson Airport in Nairobi en route to Mbaruk, was carrying two individuals, both of whom lost their lives.
The crash was reported to authorities by a member of the public, and investigations are currently underway.
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) has confirmed that they are coordinating efforts with emergency responders, local security personnel, and the Air Accident Investigation Department (MID) to gather further details.
Venezuela
Meanwhile, on January 29, another Cessna S550 Citation business jet crashed shortly after takeoff from Generalissimo Francisco de Miranda Air Base in Caracas, Venezuela.
Tragically, all three crew members aboard were killed.
The victims, all military personnel, were identified as Captain Lieutenant Colonel Henner Perozo, Co-pilot First Lieutenant José Almazan, and Chief Engineer Second Sergeant Major Eduardo Rodríguez.
South Sudan
In South Sudan, a tragic accident occurred on January 29 when a Beechcraft 1900D, carrying oil workers from the Unity oilfields of Rubkona County, crashed shortly after takeoff.
At least 19 people lost their lives, including two Chinese nationals.
The aircraft, hired by the GPOC oil firm, had 21 people on board when it went down.
Two survivors, one South Sudanese and one Indian, are in critical condition and have been hospitalized.
South Korea
On January 28, a fire broke out on an Air Busan Airbus A321 at Busan Gimhae International Airport in South Korea.
The fire, which started in the aircraft’s tail section while it was at the gate, forced the evacuation of all 170 passengers and six crew members.
While there were two confirmed injuries, it is believed that the aircraft, which was bound for Hong Kong, may be a total loss.
This incident occurred just a month after another deadly crash in December 2024, which killed 179 people in a high-profile Jeju Air accident.
Brazil
The first tragedy of the month took place on January 9, when a Cessna 525 Citation business jet exploded on a beach in Brazil.
The aircraft, attempting to land at Gastão Madeira State Airport in Ubatuba, São Paulo, overshot the runway and burst into flames after hitting the sand.
Two individuals, including the pilot, died in the crash, while eight others were injured, including three bystanders from a nearby skate park.
