Murang’a Seal coach John Njogu has revealed his side’s ultimate target following their 1-1 draw against AFC Leopards last Saturday.
Murang’a Seal head coach John Njogu has expressed confidence in his team’s progress as they prepare for the second leg of the FKF Premier League season.
Following their 1-1 draw against AFC Leopards last Saturday at Dandora Stadium, Njogu revealed the changes he has implemented since taking charge in December last year.
Seal, who sit ninth on the table with 23 points from 18 games, have shown remarkable improvement in 2025. They have won six games, drawn five, and lost seven so far.
AFC Leopards created some good chances but could not make them count as they were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw on Saturday.
However, this year, they’ve only lost once—a narrow 1-0 defeat to Kenya Police—a testament to Njogu’s impact since replacing Juma Abdallah.
Njogu attributes his team’s turnaround to embracing a technical, free-flowing style of football that plays to their strengths.
“We have not made much of a difference. We just gave them freedom to play. Our players are not physically robust. They are more technical, so asking them to resort to power play would be setting them up to fail,” Njogu explained.
“I just want them to enjoy the game and the result will come. Players like Joe (Waithira) and (Lucas) Maina are playing well now, so we will continue pushing them.”
Latest transfer updates indicate that Kenyan midfielder Timothy Ouma is nearing a move to Slavia Prague, pending medicals and final negotiations.
This philosophy has made Murang’a Seal one of the most entertaining teams to watch in the league, with their tactical discipline and creativity winning admirers.
Against AFC Leopards, Seal took the lead through Joe Waithira, following a well-executed team move from the back. However, they were pegged back before halftime when Julius Masaba, starting in place of the injured Ovella Ochieng, leveled for Leopards.
“We started well and scored the first goal after a good situation where we built from the back. The players played well, but we had a bad lapse in concentration that cost us the equaliser in the 40th minute,” Njogu admitted.
Acknowledging the quality of their opponents, he added, “AFC Leopards have quality players, and you do not expect them to miss from such situations.”
Chaos erupted at the Machakos Stadium after Elly Saenyi’s stoppage time Equalizer restored parity in stoppage time during Gor Mahia’s clash against Murang’a Seal.
Njogu also shared his tactical adjustments for the game, ensuring his side stayed compact to avoid being exposed.
“It is all about the match approach. Against Leopards, you cannot afford to be expansive as you would expose yourself. You have to be careful. They had a lot of chances to take the lead but did not take them, so we are grateful.”
Despite their position in mid-table, Njogu remains optimistic about Murang’a Seal’s prospects this season.
“We have not given up on the title. We will continue contesting for it. Hopefully, we will secure a top-five finish in the end,” he stated.
Since his appointment, Njogu has overseen steady progress, including an early win against Mathare United in December. With a strong focus on allowing players to enjoy their football and express themselves on the pitch, Seal is poised to challenge higher up the table.
