The worrying reason Harambee Stars defender Joseph Okumu missed Reims’ clash against PSG

Okumu was expected to start for Reims in their Ligue 1 clash against PSG last Saturday, but was absent from the squad as drew 1-1

Harambee Stars defender Joseph Okumu was notably absent as Stade de Reims battled to a spirited 1-1 draw against Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on Saturday.

The 27-year-old Kenyan international, who was expected to start, was sidelined after sustaining an injury during Reims’ final training session before the match.

Okumu’s absence is a significant blow to Reims, especially given his pivotal role in their defense.

Dennis Oliech has adviced Joseph Okumu over his potential next career prospects amid recent links to Serie A side Roma.

This season, the towering center-back has already endured two lengthy spells on the sidelines due to recurring adductor issues, missing a combined six weeks of action.

His latest setback compounds Reims’ defensive struggles, exacerbated by the departure of Emmanuel Agbadou to Wolverhampton for €20 million earlier this season.

In Okumu’s absence, head coach Luka Elsner was forced to improvise. With Swedish recruit Malcolm Jeng unavailable, Elsner had to reshuffle his lineup, opting for makeshift solutions.

Harambee Stars: Top 5 highest goal scorers for Kenya national football team

From the legendary Dennis Oliech to Michael Olunga, some of the greatest goal scorers have donned the national team colours for Kenya, but how do they rank?

Despite their defensive challenges, Reims put on a commendable display at the Parc des Princes. PSG took the lead early in the second half through Ousmane Dembélé, who converted a left-footed strike assisted by debutant Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

However, Reims responded swiftly, with Keito Nakamura equalizing in the 56th minute after a blistering counter-attack orchestrated by Munetsi.

Reims’ defensive resilience, even without Okumu, proved crucial as they held the French champions to a draw. PSG dominated possession and created several late chances through substitutes Bradley Barcola and Vitinha, but the visitors stood firm to secure a valuable point.

Benni McCarthy: Massive pay cut awaiting ex-Manchester United coach if he takes Harambee Stars job

Former Manchester United first-team coach Benni McCarthy has been reported as a hot favourite for the Harambee Stars job but he will have to endure a massive pay cut.

Okumu’s repeated injury issues raise concerns for both his club and national team prospects.

With Reims’ defense already stretched thin, his prolonged absence could leave them vulnerable in their quest to maintain their competitive edge in Ligue 1. For Harambee Stars, Okumu’s fitness remains pivotal as they prepare for crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers in March against The Gambia and Gabon.

The void left by Okumu underscores the challenges faced by Reims as they navigate a demanding season. His return to full fitness will be eagerly anticipated, but for now, Luka Elsner must continue to “tinker” with his defensive setup in the absence of the Kenyan stalwart.
