The sad incident happened in Mathare, where the boy's father, who is a construction worker, was attacked at dawn while his young son watched helplessly.

Witnesses recounted the harrowing scene, describing the boy crying beside his father's lifeless body, with his food scattered on the dusty ground.

The sad incident caused a stir among Kenyans, including Sonko, who vowed to help the child regain his happiness.

What did Sonko do to the Mathare boy who witnessed his father being killed while escorting him to school?

On Saturday, January 25, Sonko announced that the boy, baby James, would become part of his family.

“I thank God for blessing me with another son. Baby James, the child whose father was stabbed to death by bandits while he was helpless watching on Monday morning in Mathare area 4 while taking him to school, will now be part of my family.” Sonko said.

Through the help of local leaders, Sonko managed to connect with James, who was visibly distressed by the ordeal.

“My special congratulations to Victor Owiti Mathare Sub County Children's Officer, Christine Dembah Senior Chief Mathare, Agness Nganga Chief Tourism, Sophia Akinyi Gender Champion of SHOFCO, Mathare and Margret Nzuki CPV Tourism for taking good care of the boy from the day his father was . to be killed,” he said.

“My father was stabbed and died,” while also remembering the alleged attack on him.

“Since the child has been traumatized, I will contact a therapist for his healing journey and after that, he will continue his studies in another school I have chosen. In addition to emotional support, Sonko gifted James with various items, including educational materials, toys, clothes, shoes and bicycles.

He walked the boy around his compound, comforting and reassuring him, and promised to send him to school, as his father had once done.

Mathare residents prevent the police from taking the dead body

Following the attack, angry residents took to the streets in protest, blocking the road and initially preventing police officers from taking the body.

The protestors expressed their frustration due to the increased insecurity in the area, while accusing the police of negligence despite the increase in criminal activities.

After a while, law enforcement managed to calm the situation and recover the body, which was later transported to the mortuary, where it has been kept pending funeral procedures.
