Gor Mahia are in the market for another goalkeeper despite having four custodians on their books but there are reasons why strengthening the department is vital.
Gor Mahia goalkeeping coach Boniface Oluoch is welcoming new additions to the department after the club revealed that they intend to strengthen that position.
K’Ogalo CEO Raymond Oruo said this week that a goalkeeper is among the players they intend to bring during the midseason transfer window that opens on January 29 despite having four at their disposal already.
Gor Mahia have Kevin Omondi, Gad Mathews, Caleb Omondi and Junior Dolf Owino competing for one spot but it appears the club is still not satisfied with the options they have and want to strengthen.
“We are particularly looking to strengthen striking positions, so we are targeting an out-and-out striker, a cover goalkeeper because we have realised there is some weakness there, and there is a need to look at the right-back position,” Oruo told Citizen Digital over their transfer plans.
FKF Premier League champions Gor Mahia are looking to bolster the squad with key reinforcements during the January transfer window.
Oluoch did not want to be drawn into exactly why K’Ogalo want a new keeper when they have four but it appears the four have not covered themselves in glory, hence a need for reinforcements.
It remains to be seen how they will handle the situation or if there are expected departures but Oluoch says keepers have different skill sets.
“Games suit goalkeepers differently. There are games that need experience and you cannot play a young keeper in that instance and there are others that need sweeper keepers,” Oluoch told Pulse Sports.
“When training them, each of them has to be given equal treatment and after that, it is up to them to work and win a place in the team.”
Gor Mahia were ordered by the Sports Tribunal to hold elections within 90 days, with strict voter eligibility and monitoring conditions.
Of the four, Kevin Omondi and Mathews have played more with the latter preferred in for most of the 2022-23 season before he lost his place to the former in 2023-24 after he joined K’Ogalo from Sofapaka.
Caleb Omondi, meanwhile, has come in whenever any of the other two were not present, either through injury or suspension, while Dolf Owino features sparingly.
However, Mathews and Dolf Owino are currently nursing injuries and it is perhaps why Gor Mahia are looking for a short-term solution in the midseason transfer window.
