Grace Njoki: Clear CCTV Footage Reveals How Police Arrested SHA Critic

Clear CCTV footage showing the arrest of Grace Njoki by the police on Thursday, January 23, has emerged.

How was Grace Njoki arrested?

According to a video viewed by TUKO.co.ke, Njoki, who is a prominent critic of the Community Health Authority (SHA), was arrested while seeking medical services at Ladnan Hospital in Eastleigh, near Juja road.

In the video, Njoki is seen entering the hospital and heading to the reception area. He talks to the staff before a woman in a black suit approaches him.

Two men dressed in plain clothes approached him and started talking to him. Shortly after, uniformed police officers entered the hospital and forcibly removed him.

Njoki tried to break away from the officers, but the female officers overpowered him, took him out of the hospital and forced him into a black car that was waiting outside.

He was later taken to the Capital Hill Police Station and was scheduled to appear in court on Friday, January 24.

Why was Grace Njoki arrested?

According to information from the Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI), Njoki's arrest was related to an incident on January 15, where he and other patients invaded the boardroom of the Ministry of Health during a press conference led by the Minister of Health. Deborah Barasa.

Statement of DCI said Njoki was traced to the location where he was arrested.

“The suspect, Grace Njoki Mulei, was traced to Hombe road, near Juja road, and arrested. He has been taken to the Capital Hill Police Station, where he will remain in custody until he is brought to court tomorrow,” read part of the DCI statement.

However, the manner in which he was arrested and the charges against him caused a wide public debate.

Social groups, including the Kenya Medical Association and the Kenya Lawyers Association, condemned his arrest and demanded his immediate release as well as the dismissal of the charges.

Has Grace Njoki been released?

Currently, Njoki has been granted bail while the police continue to investigate the charges against him.

He has been released on a cash bail of KSh 10,000, which was raised by the former governor of Nairobi, Mike Sonkoand its partners.

The 61-year-old woman was accompanied by her lawyers, Ndegwa Njiru and Dan Maanzo.

Speaking to journalists, Njoki narrated how he saw a police officer whom he had previously met at Kenyatta Hospital (KNH) on the day he led other patients to invade the headquarters of the Ministry of Health.

He said he was suspicious and wondered why the officer was in Ladnan Hospital, an unfamiliar place for him. Through their brief conversation, he realized that he was being followed.

Njoki said the area was invaded by about 20 police officers, who took him by force despite the efforts of hospital staff to intervene.
