Vivian Cheruiyot has shared her determination to achieve one final milestone in her marathon career.
Four-time world champion Vivian Cheruiyot has opened up about one important milestone she wants to achieve before hanging her spikes.
The former Olympic champion is 41, older than Eliud Kipchoge by a year but she is still going strong and believes she still has it in her legs to achieve more success in her marathon running career.
Vivian Cheruiyot wants to finally win the New York City Marathon where she has achieved two podium finishes but has never won the race, something she knows is within her reach.
World 800m record holder David Rudisha got engaged in a colourful ceremony last weekend but what is there to know about the woman who has charmed her way into his heart?
The two-time Olympic silver medallist finished second at the 2018 edition of the New York City Marathon before third place at the 2024 edition of the marathon.
Last year, Cheruiyot also competed at the Paris Marathon where she finished third and built up for the New York City Marathon at the Great North Run where she finished sixth.
She expressed gratitude to have achieved a podium finish in two marathons in a year and revealed that even though age is catching up with her, it is not a factor at the moment.
“What I can say, from the bottom of my heart is that I’m so happy, I’m so grateful to be among the top finishers of the New York City Marathon,” Vivian Cheruiyot said in interview.
“It’s so fantastic and so amazing and I want to say that being top three of both races this year is great and I’m seeing my future is bright and I know one day, one time, I will win New York before I retire.
“I know my future is going to be bright despite my age and I feel proud that I’m still strong. I’m proud to be Kenyan and carry the Kenya flag and I’m generally happy to be a Kenyan athlete.”
Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce remains focused on fulfilling her dream of running faster times before retiring, despite speculation that the Paris Olympics might be her final appearance.
Meanwhile, Vivian Cheruiyot had taken a short break from competing in 2020 when she failed to finish the race at the London Marathon. In 2021 and 2022 she was a no show before bouncing back to the competitive scene in 2023.
She finished fifth at the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon and rounded up her season with the 10km race at the NN Zevenheuvelenloop, finishing sixth.
The 2024 season was a blessing for her as she managed to finish third in both her marathon races and promised to achieve more success in 2025.
