On Thursday, January 23, local newspapers provided detailed information about cases of violence against women, while the last two weeks since the new year have shown an increase in such incidents.
1. Daily Nation
The newspaper reported that the Minister of Public Service Justin Muturiwho on Tuesday skipped the Cabinet meeting chaired by President William Ruto in Kakamega, has not been in his office for the past 10 days.
Muturi was also conspicuously absent during the swearing-in of civil service commissioners at the Kenyatta International Conference Center (KICC).
Although the PSC is an independent commission, it is under its own ministry. Sources from the State House and the ministry confirmed that Muturi did not enter his office following his press conference on January 12, where he accused the government of involvement in recent kidnappings.
The defiant Muturi said he has been carrying out his duties even without going to the office. He said there were no documents in his office that required his signature.
On Tuesday, the Cabinet approved the public service internship programs. Muturi said he was the one who signed and canceled the document before it was presented to the Cabinet to be discussed at the Kakamega State Lodge.
Giving an example of Rutowho is currently on a business visit to the Western region, Muturi asked if the president should also be accused of not working in the White House.
“I have been doing my work, my job is not to be in the office, but if I am physically required, you will see me too, not a single work activity has stopped because I am not physically in the office. it's not in my job description to attend inaugurations and applaud people,” Muturi said.
A White House official, who spoke in confidence, citing the sensitivity of the matter, said the Cabinet meeting was presented in a WhatsApp group of Cabinet secretaries, dispelling rumors that Muturi was not informed.
Muturi acknowledged the existence of the WhatsApp group and said that because he did not attend the Cabinet meeting, he was not at liberty to discuss it.
Ruto Vows to Discipline MP Salasya for the way he embarrassed him: “I will straighten him out a bit so he can be gentle”
He said that even the paper found out from that source “his presence is no longer needed in the White House”.
2. Nation Today
The daily newspaper reported that billions of shillings from the government and the need to form alliances with major political parties are the main reasons why many politicians want to register new political parties.
The paper noted that the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) is currently processing about 30 applications from individuals seeking to register new parties ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Furthermore, some people who have no intention of running for political positions aim to register new parties with the aim of selling them towards the general election.
The buying and selling of political parties has become a very profitable business, especially due to the fear of politicians being disenfranchised during party primaries.
Some of the main political leaders have also found themselves without parties after the conflicting parties left with their party certificates.
Events like this have forced aspiring politicians to run in general elections to establish their own parties, enabling them to negotiate coalition agreements with major political entities.
The law that requires the National Government to allocate billions of shillings to finance political parties has turned party activities into big business.
About 48 political parties participating in the 2022 general election are receiving millions of public money to support their activities.
Since then, Registrar of Political Parties Anne Nderitu has granted provisional registration to six new political parties.
3. The Standard
According to the daily, as the dust settles on the impact of the Ruto-led Cabinet meeting in Kakamega on Tuesday, questions still abound as to why the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service and Human Capital Development, Justin Muturi, did not attend that important meeting.
Although news sources said that the Minister was not officially invited to the Cabinet meeting, the government, through Cabinet Secretary Mercy Wanjau, maintained that he was invited like other Cabinet Secretaries and did not intend or give reasons to escape.
Aisha Jumwa congratulates President Ruto for appointing him as Head of the Roads Board: “I am very grateful”
Sources and associates close to Muturi told The Standard newspaper that he did not receive the briefing from Wanjau as per standard operating procedures.
The briefing, according to sources, is usually sent to each Cabinet Secretary to outline the agenda and expectations of their documents, which are then submitted to the Cabinet.
“Being in the WhatsApp group of the Cabinet, Muturi only received a general message of invitation from Wa njau, but he did not receive a personal briefing on the Cabinet for his document as has happened in the past. This was not just a coincidence, as it comes following Muturi's revelation about the abduction of his son and blaming the President and the Head of National Intelligence,” said the source.
Muturi is said to have avoided the meeting to avoid embarrassment and potential conflict, as he had not been informed of what was expected of him.
This is not the first meeting of the President for Muturi to fly. Last week, he did not attend the official residence of the Deputy President Kithur Kindikiwho was meeting with Embu leaders to calm the restive Mt Kenya area.
