Doctors in Elgeyo-Marakwet have heeded to a court order which instructed them to suspend the strike for 7 days to allow for dialogue between them and the Department of Health.
North Rift Kenya Medical Pharmacist and Dentists Union Secretary Dr. Kamonzi Mulei called off the strike and urged all doctors to resume duties Thursday in order to give the labour office and government time to address their grievances.
Addressing the press in Iten, Dr. Kamonzi called on the county government to ensure that all doctors were promoted, as that was one of the major issues which led to the protest. However, he said the county government had already promoted 70% of the medics.
He took issue with the county government saying while doctors had gone back to school and become specialists, they were still on Job Group N which was against their scheme of service and called on the County Public Service Board to adhere to it.
Dr. Mulei said while they would abide by the court order, if the current issues were not addressed, they would call for another strike where they would demand for the full implementation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
The doctors have been on strike from December 2024.
