Olympics champion Beatrice Chebet has weighed in on what she will need to do to break another world following her remarkable season in 2024.
Double Olympics champion Beatrice Chebet is not giving timelines on when she will break another world record given her recent heroics.
Chebet holds the 10,000m world record set at the Prefontaine Classic last May, when she ran 28:54.14 to become the first woman to break the 29-minute barrier, and also lowered the 5km world record when she clocked 13:54 at the Cursa dels Nassos in Barcelona on New Year’s Eve.
The 24-year-old also attempted the 5,000m world record at the Zurich Diamond League but fell short of Gudaf Tsegay’s 14:00.21 mark, when she ran 14:09.52, and she says she will not enter into the 2025 season thinking of breaking records as it is something that happens spontaneously.
Loice Chemnung is eying a ticket to the 2025 Tokyo World Athletics Championships in key events dominated by Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet.
“For now, I can’t say anything but everything is possible, in athletics you may predict and say I want to try and break records, like I tried in Zurich but it didn’t work out but again you can break a record without setting your mind that you want to do it, so the only focus is to work hard in training and if the body adjusts well, then it is possible,” Chebet told Flashscore.
“Athletics standards are now very different from the previous seasons, the standards set are very high, so what I can only say is to work hard in training and everything will be okay during races.
“For now, I can’t say anything (if I can break the record), because even the programme of my coach or manager will dictate what I get, we have to plan and for now the focus is on World Championship, the rest, like breaking records, will come later.”
Chebet had a highly successful 2024 season when she started by defending her World Cross-Country title, won two Olympics gold medals as well as the Diamond League crown.
Heading into the 2025 season, Chebet is seen as the woman to beat in both 5,000m and 10,000m where she will be eyeing her first world title.
