The Safaricom Found has committed to construct a Sh50 million integrated mother and newborn Unit at Nasewa in Busia Sub County.
The program dubbed Afya Uzazi Salama will consist of a doctor’s resting place, a 12-bed capacity ward and a newborn unit that will be well equipped with a pre-term area.
Speaking during the ground- breaking ceremony, Busia Deputy Governor, Arthur Odera said that the County Government will work closely with Safaricom Foundation to ensure that the project succeeds.
Odera who doubles at the CECM for health added that the County government will recruit more staff to serve at the facility.
He at the same time reminded the local residents to register with the Social Health Authority in order to access health services easily.
“At least 10% of the local population becomes impoverished due to medical related bills,” he said, adding that SHA will help the residents to settle such bills without straining.
Safaricom Foundation PLC Chair, Joseph Ogutu thanked the County leadership for cooperating with them, adding that the program will ensure that no mother suffers challenges while delivering.
Ogutu disclosed that the Foundation has also improved infrastructure in other parts of the country.
