How did the Narok riots happen?
A violent conflict erupted after protests broke out in response to the death of a sheep in a non-injury accident on the Narok-Maimahiu Highway.
The protestors, estimated to be around 2,000 in number, blocked the busy road at Duka Moja Business Center, demanding compensation for the livestock killed the previous day.
According to the National Police Service, the situation quickly escalated as police officers arrived at the scene to quell the violence.
However, the anger of the crowd grew, and the officers found themselves facing a violent mob.
In response, the police decided to fire blanks and distribute tear gas to disperse the people. The protests were soon out of control.
“Today 17/01/2025 at 1100 hours, a group of about 2000 protesters blocked Narok-Maimahiu Highway at Duka Moja Business Centre, demanding compensation for 25 sheep killed in a non-injury accident on 16/01/2025. Narok-Maimahiu highway in Mitimbili area Officers tried to calm the situation but the crowd turned violent more, causing the Officers to shoot and tear gas to disperse the people,” the police reported.
Police said that traffic resumed on the Narok-Maimahiu Highway following talks between Narok East Member of Parliament Lemanken Aramat and residents.
How the Narok protest disturbed the drivers
As previously reported, the protest brought the Narok-Kisii road to a standstill, leaving commuters stranded for hours.
Motorist David Okong'o, who was stuck in traffic for more than three hours, expressed frustration over the situation.
He questioned whether the animals were more important than the lives lost on the road, adding that some of his passengers missed their flights.
