The new season began with Russell participating in the 4x400m relay at the Rod McCravy Memorial on January 11. This initial outing marked a warm-up for what was to come, as Russell soon returned to her signature event, the hurdles.

On January 17, she competed at the Texas Tech Corky Classic, held at the Sports Performance Center in Texas.
