Problems of Moi University
Moi University, one of the leading institutions of higher education in Kenya, has faced many challenges in recent years that have threatened its administrative stability.
The university has been grappling with issues such as financial mismanagement, allegations of corruption, and leadership conflicts that have reportedly led to a decline in academic standards and public trust.
The last session of the council was plagued by many debates, including tensions over the selection of important administrative positions, the waste of college funds and the reported failure to properly address the interests of students and staff.
Moi University was closed indefinitely on October 3, 2024, following student unrest fueled by prolonged labor strikes over non-payment of salaries and other dues. The institution's debts were said to be close to KSh 10 billion, causing operational challenges that prevent its proper operation.
The government committed to save the situation at Moi University, and the National Treasury released KSh 609 million in October 2024.
Education Minister Julius Ogamba and Higher Education Secretary Beatrice Inyangala were at the institution on November 30 to witness the signing of the return to work formula between Moi University and its staff following long negotiations.
Moi University workers threaten a new strike
However, the workers have recently accused Moi University of disregarding the return to work formula signed between them. In a notice issued on Friday, January 10, the labor unions threatened to suspend their services immediately.
To avoid the strike, Moi University reportedly paid KSh 113 million as salary arrears for October, November and December.
A new beginning Moi University
Many see the new appointment as an opportunity to reposition and revitalize the university's governance.
Prof. Noah Midamba, a respected scholar with a history of administrative reforms in other institutions, brings hope for a fresh start to the Kesses-based institution.
The appointment comes just one week after the President Ruto promising to form a committee to investigate the magnitude of the challenges facing Moi University and their long-term solutions.
