Embu County Government has procured assorted firefighting equipment for all the 26 Vocational Training Centres (VTC) to enhance fire disaster preparedness.
The equipment including carbon dioxide gas, foam and powder extinguishers, signs as well as fire blankets and first aid kits is meant to help the institutions respond quickly in case of fire breakout.
“This is a precautionary measure we have taken that will ensure our VTCs are in a position to control and extinguish small fires before they become big and uncontrollable,” said County CECM in charge of Education Daniel Ngeranwa.
Speaking while receiving the equipment delivered by Dejofil Fire Safety Limited on Friday, the CEC said two managers from each institution were also trained on firefighting skills and techniques by the same company.
He said the two-day training conducted in December last year focused on areas such as communication during an emergency, fire prevention and suppression.
TVET County Chief Officer Ephantus Mugendi said the equipment will also go a long way in creating a secure environment in the learning institutions where fire hazard stands out as a potential threat.
“The importance of fire safety in our VTC institutions cannot be overstated and that is why we have taken this bold step to secure our learners,” he said.
Dejofil Fire Safety Limited lead fire technician and trainer Franklin Korir exuded confidence the county was adequately prepared in case of a fire emergency following the training and provision of equipment.
The company is also expected to install the equipment in the critical areas of the institutions.
