As of January, only 10 students have reported returning to school, marking a dramatic decline in the educational center.

TUKO.co.ke visited the institution, we encountered a lifeless street, and without security at the gate, a terrible reminder of its glory days.

The principal of the school, John Aketch, gave a negative picture of the challenges facing the school.

“So far, we have only 10 students who have reported and eight teachers,” Aketch told TUKO.co.ke.

“Even the 10 who have returned have not paid their taxes,” he added.

Why is Moi Nyatike Boys falling?

The head revealed that financial problems are the core of the institution's problems. For the past 18 months, the school has failed to pay salaries to staff, leading to mass exodus.

“From cooks to security officers, they have all left due to salary arrears. The school is barely functioning,” Aketch complained.

With staff morale at an all-time low, teachers are now seeking transfers to other schools, leaving the principal concerned about the school's ability to meet its responsibilities.

“Unless the community intervenes to support the institution, Moi Nyatike Boys may soon be forgotten,” Aketch warned.

How did Moi Nyatike Boys School do in the 2024 KCSE exams?

To add to these problems, the school's academic performance has dropped significantly. In the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) 2024 results, the top student got a C-, while the rest recorded a disappointing grade of nine Ds, seven Ds and Es.

Despite having adequate facilities according to the standards of the education department, the school has failed to regain its footing. Chief Aketch attributes this to the lack of parental and community support, which is compounded by the inability of students to pay school fees.

The case of Moi Nyatike Boys mirrors that of other former educational giants in Migori County, including Migori Boys, Nyabohanze Girls in Kuria, and Koderobara Boys, who have also posted poor results and declining enrolments.

Education experts in Migori are still wondering how to save these once thriving schools, which now face a bleak future.
