Timothy Cheruiyot explores new training methods in South Africa to reclaim his 1500m throne and obliterate Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Josh Kerr and Co.
Former world 1500m champion Timothy Cheruiyot is having the time of his life in South Africa, engaging in a more improved coaching technique as he looks to dethrone Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Josh Kerr and Cole Hocker.
Cheruiyot was invited to South Africa by coach Tomasz Lewandowski during an interaction they had and the Kenyan 1500m ace took the opportunity with both hands.
According to Letsrun.com, Cheruiyot moved to South Africa about three weeks ago and he admitted to his agent Malcolm Anderson that he has never experienced such a kind of training in his entire existence.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce has discussed the pressure to break Flo-Jo’s 100m world record, insisting that while it’s a goal, it doesn’t consume her focus.
Lewandowski’s group is structured in a way that it has its nutritionist and physiotherapist but for Cheruiyot, things are different. He has a physio in Nairobi who does not work for his training base in Rongai.
Cheruiyot has yet to fully join the camp and after he completes the training stint in South Africa, he will resume normal operations with his coach Bernard Ouma.
“He hadn’t done that in Nairobi as much, if at all. Tim wants to do things a little bit different and he needs to think out of the box a little bit more,” Anderson told LetsRun.com.
“He’s had a fantastic run with a structure in place for many, many years in Nairobi. But he’s at a stage where you have to make a few adjustments.”
Anderson further noted that Cheruiyot is doing fine at the moment and there are no cases of injuries. The agent further noted that they have to think outside the box as they look to make 2025 an unforgettable experience.
He added that they would not be looking to make major adjustments while he is still in South Africa and they will wait until Cheruiyot returns to Nairobi, Kenya. Cheruiyot will maintain focus on the 1500m and he might compete in the 3000m or 5000m once in a while.
Both Sha’Carri Richardson and Usain Bolt reveal a shared truth about the unseen journey to fleeting Olympics moments.
“There’s the open door for being involved in Tomasz’s group. And this is checking that environment out and seeing how that goes. There’s no commitment from Tim’s side at the moment,” Anderson said.
“We do want to look at doing the 3,000 and the 5,000 and I wouldn’t be surprised if you see him on the start line in a 5k at some point this season. That’s kind of a natural progression.”
“It’s also something that he’s not done before. So you have to change things up a bit. Personally, I think that’s a very good decision on his part, and I think he will really benefit from that opportunity to look at things that are different.”
In 2025, Cheruiyot’s main focus will be on the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan and the Diamond League Meeting final in Zurich.
He is also interested in competing in at least one Grand Slam Track League meet as a Challenger since slots for Racers have already been filled.
