Gor Mahia aim to sip cold Tusker as record champions brace for busy week

Gor Mahia are poised to mark their return to league action against Tusker FC.

Gor Mahia will aim to intensify their quest for a successful title defense as they resume FKF Premier League action on Sunday.

The defending champions face Tusker FC at Machakos Stadium, marking their first league appearance since a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Kariobangi Sharks on December 22, 2024, before the Christmas break.

Their earlier scheduled return to league action on January 5 against Tusker was postponed, as were other league fixtures that weekend.

The defending champions have not tasted league action since December 22, 2024.

Compounding their delayed restart, their subsequent fixture against Posta Rangers was also pushed back, partly due to Gor Mahia contributing four key players to Harambee Stars’ Mapinduzi Cup campaign.

With the long pause behind them, interim coach Zedekiah “Zico” Otieno expressed optimism about the team’s readiness to resume their campaign.

“I think we are preparing well; we’re moving on as planned. Everyone is fit for selection, and we’re focused on our upcoming matches. Sunday’s game against Tusker will be tough, followed by midweek against Sofapaka and next Sunday against Homeboyz in Mumias. It’s a challenging schedule, but we’re ready,” said Otieno.

The Scot has expressed interest in the Harambee Stars job, citing past success in Kenya and optimism for the future.

The defending champions have a busy week ahead, taking on Sofapaka in midweek action after their scalp with the Brewers before travelling to Mumias for a clash against Kakamega Homeboyz next Sunday.

“It’s difficult but now that is the situation that we are in as a team and we have to think and prepare taking that into consideration. If you can remember before our break we played 8 matches in 20 days which was not easy but we’ve rested enough. Now we have three matches in a row which I think we can handle,” he assured.

Otieno acknowledged Tusker’s strength but reiterated Gor Mahia’s resolve to assert their dominance.

'You have to win' -Musa Masika on the pressure that comes with playing for Gor Mahia

Masika, who joined Gor Mahia in January 2024, has revealed how being at the club has made him develop a “winner’s mentality”.

“Tusker has always been a strong team, but Gor Mahia is the defending champion. We won’t make it easy for them. The boys know the importance of every match, and we’re preparing accordingly. Football has three possible results, and we take each with humility, but our goal is always to win,” added Otieno.

Victory on Sunday would propel Gor Mahia past Tusker on the league standings. The Brewers are tied on 27 points with leaders KCB, but Tusker currently sits second due to goal difference with Gor Mahia trailing them in third on 24 points.

As their season resumes, all eyes will be on K’Ogalo to see if they can maintain the momentum needed to secure another league title.
