Victor Wanyama remains Kenya’s biggest football export having made history as the country’s first and only player to have played in the English Premier League.
Wanyama plied his trade with Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur before switching to the MLS with his football journey in Europe also having taken him to Sweden, Belgium and Scotland.
The central midfielder made 64 appearances for Kenya, captaining the country at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, before retiring from international football in 2021.

Wanyama was born on June 25 1991 in a sporting family as he is the son of former AFC Leopards player Noah Wanyama while his mother Mildred was a netball player.
The player’s brothers are also footballers with McDonald Mariga, one of Kenya’s top players, having played for a number of clubs in Europe such as Inter Milan, Parma and Latina in Italy as well as Real Sociedad and Real Oviedo in Spain.
Mariga remains the only player from East Africa to have won the prestigious UEFA Champions League when he lifted the ‘Big Ears’ trophy with Inter in 2010 under Jose Mourinho.
Wanyama’s other brothers Sylvester and Thomas were also footballers while his sister Mercy plays professional basketball in Europe.

Wanyama’s football talent was discovered while at Kamkunji High School in Nairobi after which he joined the JMJ Academy, who would later loan him out to Kenyan sides AFC Leopards and Nairobi City Stars.
The midfielder moved to Europe in 2007 to join Swedish club Helsingborg, playing for one year, before switching to Belgium where he signed for Germinal Beerschot. It was here that Wanyama made a name as one of Europe’s best young defensive midfielders and after three years, Scottish giants Celtic came calling for £900,000.
At Celtic, Wanyama quickly became a cult hero with his impressive performances for Neil Lennon’s side. Besides winning two league titles, Wanyama’s stock rose when he scored against Barcelona in the Champions League as Celtic pulled off a 2-1 shock in 2012-13.
At the end of that season, Wanyama joined Premier League club Southampton for £12.5 million, making history as the first Kenyan in the English top flight.

Wanyama had three great years at Southampton, playing 94 games and scoring four goals, before Tottenham came knocking with his former coach Mauricio Pochettino going back for one of his ex-players.
He moved to Whitehat Lane in June 2016 for £11 million, signing a five-year contract, but lasted four, the first two of which he was a key cog for Spurs, managing seven goals in 97 matches after which he moved to the US.
Wanyama signed for MLS club CF Montreal in March 2020, then managed by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, becoming the club’s Designated Player. He signed a two-year contract that would be renewed until December 2024 and he left at the expiry of his deal after falling down the pecking order.
In total, he made 133 appearances for CF Montreal and scored six goals.

Victor Wanyama has been in a relationship with actress and former TV presenter Serah Teshna for close to eight years and even though they have never confirmed the status of their relationship, they have been living together in Canada where the footballer is based.
Their union is blessed with two children: a son aged three and a daughter born in mid-2024.
