- Activist Nelson Amenya has won a defamation case involving tycoon Jayesh Saini, with a French court ruling in her favor
- Amenya, known for exposing the failed JKIA-Adani airport project, accused Saini of being involved in the Community Health Act (SHA) alleged violations
- The court is said to have ordered Saini to pay compensation, with Amenya celebrating the decision as a victory for whistleblowers and transparency.
Kenyan activist and whistleblower Nelson Amenya has reportedly won a major legal victory against tycoon Jayesh Saini.
According to Amenya, a French court ruled on January 14, 2024, in her favor, to dismiss Saini's defamation claim and ordered her to pay compensation for legal fees and time lost.
Amenya used her X account (formerly Twitter) to celebrate the decision.
“BIG WIN!! Yesterday, 14 Jan 2024, the French courts ruled on my case against Jayesh Saini, and I freakin' won the case. He has been ordered to pay me for wasting my time and legal fees!” He wrote.
Who is Nelson Amenya?
Amenya is a Kenyan activist and whistleblower living in France. He became famous for exposing the unclear JKIA-Adani airport plan. His revelations led to the cancellation of a procurement process that would have transferred control of Nairobi's main airport to India's Adani Group for several years.
Amenya was also instrumental in exposing defects within the public health sector in Kenya under the new health insurance scheme established under the Community Health Authority (SHA). He revealed how unclear figures allegedly want to use the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), endangering the integrity of public health services.
Saini responded to Amenya's revelations by filing defamation cases in Kenya and France. However, the cases were largely seen as an attempt to silence the activist and prevent him from exposing corrupt practices.
The activist earlier appealed to well-meaning Kenyans for help, raising funds to cover his legal expenses.
Mothers disrupt the meeting of the Minister of Health
In a related story, a group of frustrated patients, including a mother with a 3-day-old baby, disrupted a Ministry of Health press conference in Nairobi to confront Health Minister Deborah Barasa about the failure of the SHA.
The patients were upset with the failure of the system and the incompetence of the bureaucracy, which has prevented them from accessing essential health services despite having paid their fees.
