Equity Group CEO James Mwangi Gets International Job: “Thankful”

The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) has appointed Equity Group managing director (MD) James Mwangi in its International Board of Advisors.

What is CFR?

CFR is an American think tank specializing in US foreign policy and international relations.

The CFR Board brings together the expertise of leading academics, business executives, civil society leaders, and politicians from 25 countries.

CFR members also include secretaries of state, CIA directors, donors, lawyers, professors, CEOs, corporate directors, and media personalities.

What James Mwangi said about joining CFR

Mwangi said he will use the opportunity to advance the agenda and economic opportunities in Africa.

“I am delighted to have been asked to join the Council of Advisors of the Council on Foreign Relations, and am grateful for this opportunity to bring a positive African narrative to the discussion.

The opportunity to articulate Africa's contributions to the world now and for decades to come as the continent takes its place on the global stage will mean a fruitful partnership for countries around the world to work with the people of Africa,” he said.

The International Board of Advisors, now in its 12th year, improves communication between US leaders and their counterparts overseas while strengthening CFR's understanding of international perspectives.

When did Mwangi take up a role at the World Bank?

In December 2024, Mwangi was invited to join the World Bank's High Level Employment Advisory Council, which was created to address the challenges of creating global jobs.

The Council aims to address employment opportunities for youth and women, especially in developing countries, where job creation remains a critical issue.

Mwangi emphasized the need to increase demographic change in Africa, and pledged to support the creation of 50 million jobs in the region by 2030.

Under Mwangi's stewardship, Equity Group has grown into a globally recognized brand in the banking industry.

Recently, it was ranked as the second most valuable banking brand in the world.

Outside the banking environment, he played a major role in empowering young people, especially through the Equity Wings to Fly Group program.

What to know about James Mwangi

Mwangi rose from a goat farmer to managing director and chief executive officer of Equity Group Holdings Limited.

His success came in 1993, when the Equality Society (EBS), founded in 1984 by Peter Munga as a mutual society, was on its knees. It had already been declared bankrupt and was facing liquidation.
