On Wednesday, January 15, the daily newspapers published various topics, including the possibility of the reorganization of the National Executive Council, which would be carried out by the President William Ruto.
Elsewhere, Raila Odinga's position in the vote for the chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC) and the report of the Minister of Public Service Justin Muturi about the kidnapping of his son also dominated the pages.
1. Daily Nation
The newspaper reported on the possible change of the Council of Ministers soon.
The last recess approved by President William Ruto was on December 19, 2024, when two ministers got the sack.
This time, according to the Daily Nation newspaper, the president is looking at two experienced politicians from Mount Kenya East who will enter the government to calm the region and stop the opposition from the former vice president Rigathi Gachagua before the 2027 vote.
On Sunday, January 12, Ruto with veteran politician and former governor of Meru Kiraitu Murungi at the State House.
Kenyan newspapers, January 14: Minister Justin Muturi says he is not afraid of being fired by Ruto from the government
Sources told this newspaper that the meeting was part of an ongoing conspiracy to challenge Gachagua's influence in the Mt Kenya East region.
Ruto, according to sources, intends to reshuffle his Cabinet by welcoming Kiraitu, and Peter Munyawho is also a former governor of Meru.
“Unlike in the past when the president made changes following strong push from the youth, the Head of State is interested in making changes to his Cabinet with an eye to save his dwindling support in Mount Kenya,” Daily Nation quoted one of the sources.
In the wider scheme of things, sources say, Cabinet Secretary for Water and Irrigation Eric Mugaa may pay the price as the president moves to reduce the growing discontent in the region that gave him more than 2.9 million votes in the last election.
2. People Daily
The newspaper reported on a report by Public Service Minister Justin Muturi, which put the director of the National Intelligence Service (NIS) Noordin Haji in the mud.
In a document published on Tuesday, January 14, Muturi claimed that Haji was at the center of the kidnapping of his son (Muturi) in June 2024.
Leslie Muturi was allegedly kidnapped on June 23, 2024, in the Kilimani area of Nairobi by people believed to be police officers.
The hijacking took place at the height of public anger over the 2024 Finance Bill.
In his document, Muturi says he was sure that it was Haji who authorized the kidnapping of his son.
Helpless at the time, he further reveals that he approached the then Home Affairs Minister, Kithure Kindiki, who in turn contacted Haji, who denied having anything to do with Leslie's disappearance.
Dissatisfied with Kindiki's lukewarm attitude on the matter, Muturi decided to involve Ruto.
He says that he traveled to the State House, Nairobi, where he contacted the president directly about the matter.
Ruto, according to Muturi, took the initiative, called and demanded an explanation from Haji, who immediately admitted to detaining Leslie.
Under pressure from the president, Haji directed Leslie's captors to release him.
