The Government, through the Ministry of Sports, has confirmed that Kenya is ready to host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya expressed confidence that all teething issues will be resolved this week, with the championship now less than three weeks away.
What is CHAN?
The African Nations Championship is a competition like the African Nations Cup; Only domestic players are allowed to participate, that is, players who play in their domestic leagues. Therefore, the Harambee Stars squad is expected to be dominated by players who play in the Kenya Premier League.
When and where is CHAN 2024?
Kenya will organize the championship together with its neighbors in East Africa, Uganda and Tanzania. The tournament will start from February 1 to 28.
What did Salim Mvurya say about CHAN?
Addressing the media on Sunday evening at the Kenya International Conference Center (KICC), the recently appointed Sports Minister confirmed that all systems are in place for CHAN 2024.
“I want to announce to Kenyans that Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania are ready to host the championship next month.
When is the CHAN 2024 draw?
Mvurya also hinted at CAF's support and confidence, confirming that Kenya was chosen to host the draw for the tournament. The group stage draw will be held on Wednesday, January 15, KICC.
“CAF has great confidence in the Republic of Kenya. On Wednesday, the team meeting will be held here at KICC. All 19 teams will be joined, and after that each team will know who they will meet in the tournament.”
Are Kenyan stadiums ready for CHAN 2024?
One of the biggest concerns of CHAN 2024 and Kenya's participation is the issue of stadiums. Plots of Kasarani and Soles are closed for repairs, but there was great concern that the works would not be completed in time for the draw.
However, Mvurya reiterated that the work will be completed this week.
“CAF inspectors are pleased with the renovation work so far. In Nyayo, only the lights remain. The same in Kasarani. I have no doubt that both stadiums will be ready.”
Mvurya was accompanied by his Deputy, Peter Tum, FKF President Hussein Mohamed, and the head of the Regional Organizing Committee, Nicolas Musonye, among other leaders.
