Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has experienced a rare league goal drought in Qatar which leaves him fighting with many other candidates for the Golden Boot.
Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga’s recent goal drought in the league has allowed rivals to close in on the chase for the Golden Boot in the Qatar Stars League.
Olunga has not been on target in Al Duhail’s last three league matches, leaving him in a crowded race for the top scorer’s gong in the division, having been among the leading contenders in November.
Olunga had scored in five straight matches between September 21 and November 1, which put his tally to eight league goals for the season, and just one behind the leading scorer at the time, but now, he is two behind and level with four others, while four more players are just one behind.
Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has expressed his unwavering commitment to Qatari club Al Duhail, giving reasons why he is not looking elsewhere at the moment.
Al Rayyan’s Brazilian forward Roger Guedes is now the league’s leading scorer with 10 goals from 12 matches with Olunga joining Al Sadd duo Akram Afif and Rafa Mujica, Antonio Mance of Umm Salal and Al Shahania’s Pelle Van Amersfoort on eight goals a piece from a similar number of games.
Olunga’s Al Duhail team-mate and captain Almoez Ali is among four players who have scored seven goals, joining former Paris Saint-Germain star Julian Draxler, who now plays for Al Ahli, his team-mate Omar Sekou and Ricardo Gomes of Al Wakrah.
While Olunga will be looking forward to team honours with the league title in his sights, individual accolades will also play a part in who is named Player of the Season and whoever emerges top scorer will be a major contender.
Kenyan players continue to impress in various leagues across the world but as the new year starts, who is the most valuable?
The Kenyan forward knows how it feels to win the Golden Boot, having been crowned in 2021-22 and 2022-23, before missing out last season, when he managed 15 league goals, in a campaign when he had to deal with injuries.
It was a drop from the 22 league goals he bagged in each of the previous two seasons and will be looking to return to scoring goals soon even if Al Duhail seem to be doing well now, even when he is not scoring, unlike before.
Christophe Galtier’s men lead the standings with 28 points, three more than Al Sadd, after thrashing Qatar SC 4-1 on Sunday.
