The defending champions have not tasted league action since December 22, 2024.
Record Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia are gearing up for a pivotal return to league action after a lengthy hiatus.
Their last competitive outing was on December 2, 2024, when they edged out Kariobangi Sharks 1-0 before the Christmas break.
During the break, Gor Mahia remained active, engaging in a friendly match against Ugandan side Kitara FC on January 6.
Finally, the much-awaited clash between Gor Mahia and Yanga SC is set to electrify Siaya’s Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium.
The clash, held during the ceremonial opening of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium in Siaya, ended in Gor Mahia’s favor after a penalty shootout.
The team was initially scheduled to face Tusker FC on January 4 at the Machakos Stadium as part of the league resumption. However, the FKF Premier League delayed its restart, postponing all fixtures slated for that weekend.
League matches finally resumed on Saturday, January 11, but Gor Mahia’s encounter with Sofapaka was again postponed.
Contributing to the delays was Gor Mahia’s contribution of four first-team players—captain Austin Odhiambo, Ronney Onyango, Alphonce Omija, and Sylvester Owino—who were called up for national duty in the ongoing Mapinduzi Cup in Zanzibar.
Now, with fixtures rescheduled, Gor Mahia’s much-anticipated return to league action will occur on Sunday, January 19, when they face second-placed Tusker FC at the Machakos Stadium.
The match is crucial for K’Ogalo’s title defense ambitions, as they currently sit third in the standings, trailing Tusker by three points. Both Tusker and league leaders KCB are tied on 27 points, with goal difference separating them.
A win against the Brewers, coached by Charles Okere, would propel Gor Mahia to second place on the log, ahead of Tusker on goal difference. T
he stakes are even higher considering Tusker’s recent 2-1 loss to Shabana at the Gusii Stadium on Saturday, which could leave them vulnerable.
FKF Premier League defending champions Gor Mahia will be looking to up the ante in their quest to rdefend their title in 2025.
Following their clash with Tusker, Gor Mahia will face a packed schedule. They are set to take on Sofapaka on Wednesday, January 22, in a midweek fixture before wrapping up the month with a challenging encounter against Kakamega Homeboyz on Sunday, January 26, at the Mumias Complex.
As the race for the Kenyan Premier League title heats up, the defending champions will look to leverage their experience and depth to close the gap at the top and strengthen their bid for a record-extending championship.
