The Red Devils forced Arsenal into a post-match penalty shootout despite playing with 10 men for most of the game to secure a morale-boosting victory in the FA Cup third round.
Manchester United secured passage into the next round of the FA Cup following a 5-3 post-match shootout win against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
The Gunners were considered favourites but Ruben Amorim’s team stayed in the game despite playing with 10 men from the 61st minute to secure the win.
United survived early pressure from Arsenal before Bruno Fernandes gave them a 52nd minute lead after connecting well with a great pass from Alejandro Garanacho following a swift counter attack.
Marcus Rashford is at a crossroad in his career and a move away from Old Trafford is expected this month after falling out with United coach Ruben Amorim.
However, the lead lasted 11 minutes when Gabriel hammered home after United failed to deal with a corner.
The goal arrived in the 63rd minute just two minutes after Diogo Dalot had been sent off for a second bookable offence, leaving the Red Devils a man light.
Arsenal took full advantage and laid siege at United’s goal and it was down to the heroics of second-choice goalkeeper Altay Bayindir to keep them in the game.
The goalkeeper saved Martin Odegaard’s penalty in the 72nd minute and also denied Declan Rice and Kai Havertz from close range as United survived.
It forced the match into extra-time but there was still no way through for either side, taking it into the post-match shootout.
United converted all their penalties through Fernandes, Amad Diallo, Leny Yoyo, Lisandro Martinez and Joshua Zirkzee while Arsenal had Havertz missing his spot-kick, either side of Odegaard, Rice and Thomas Partey’s penalties.
United will now face Leicester City in the fourth round following the draw conducted on Sunday evening.
