Kenya Newspapers, January 10: KCSE 2024 Candidates Flutter As A Grades Rise

On Friday, January 10, local newspapers widely reported the success of candidates who took the Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) 2024 examination.

Elsewhere, 840 candidates had their KCSE results withdrawn for alleged involvement in exam cheating.

1. People Daily

The post highlighted the increase in the number of A grades in the 2024 KCSE exam, compared to 2023.

The total number of candidates who scored straight As in last year's KCSE results rose to 1,693 from 1,216 in 2023, an increase of 0.18%.

Similarly, A-(minus) grades rose to 9,436 from 8,470 last year, a 0.98 percent increase overall, representing a jump of 6.78%.

In the gender performance index, boys beat girls by about half, with 1,136 of them scoring A (clear) against 556 and the latter.

The number of candidates who scored B+ (plus) rose to 19,150 compared to 18,078 last year, which is an increase of 1.98%.

Of the 962,512 candidates who took the 2024 KCSE exam, 480,310 were men, while 482,202 were women, equivalent to 49.90 percent and 50.10 percent of all candidates respectively.

Education Minister Julius Ogamba said it is the first time since the introduction of the KCSE exam that female candidates are more than their male counterparts.

The total number of candidates increased by 64,553, which is an increase of 7.19% from the previous year.

2. The Standard

The newspaper released candidates who did not get their 2024 KCSE results, which were withheld due to cases of examination cheating.

A total of 840 candidates were affected.

Furthermore, the results of another 2,899 candidates suspected of being involved in malpractice have been withheld pending an investigation by the National Examinations Council (KNEC).

The Minister of Education Julius Ogamba revealed that the candidates were found guilty of engaging in misconduct, despite measures taken to ensure the accountability and integrity of the examination process. However, the Minister did not reveal the schools attended by the affected students.

“There were 840 candidates who were involved in examination malpractices in the 2024 KCSE examination, and their examination results have been cancelled,” he said.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister revealed that the results of other candidates suspected of involvement in examination malpractices have been withheld until the completion of the investigation which should be completed within 30 days from the official date of release of the examination results.

Ogamba said the investigation, guided by the Laws of the National Examination Council of Kenya (Handling of Examination Irregularities) of 2015, will be completed within 30 days after the official release of the results.
