How was the 2024 KCSE grading system calculated?
The 2024 KCSE grading system brought significant changes aimed at increasing access to higher education.
Only two subjects were necessary for calculating the average score: Mathematics and one language subject, which could be English, Kiswahili, or Kenyan Sign Language.
This was a change from the previous system which required five compulsory subjects.

Apart from the compulsory subjects, KNEC considered the performance in the best five subjects among the remaining subjects taken by the candidate.
This approach allowed students' ability in various subjects to positively affect their grade point average.
How is KCSE grade point average calculated?
The average KCSE score is based on summing the scores from the seven best subjects (including the two compulsory ones) and then dividing by seven.
It is assumed that the marking is subject to adjustments based on overall performance to maintain consistency throughout the years, ensuring fairness due to different paper difficulties.
