- Deputy President Kindiki cited financial constraints, exacerbated by the withdrawal of the 2024 Finance Bill, as the reason for the struggle of the SHA
- The government will use the additional budget to deal with SHA issues and ensure it is successful
- Kindiki reported 17 million Kenyans have been registered under the UHC program, Taifa Care, and efforts to improve hospital services
- Despite the limited budget, the government continues to commit to funding primary health care and solving administrative challenges for the success of UHC
Deputy President Kithur Kindiki has linked the problems that brought the Social Health Authority (SHA) to financial problems in the Kenya First administration.
Kithure said the problems facing the SHA will be solved through the supplementary budget.
Since its launch in October 2024, SHA has been facing a myriad of challenges that have made Kenyans choose to outsource medical services.
How the government plans to solve the challenges of SHA
Speaking at the Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi, on Wednesday, January 8, Professor Kindiki said the challenges will be resolved in the additional budget, which will allow additional funding for the program.
The DP noted that the withdrawal of the 2024 Finance Bill created a huge budget hole and financial deficit that has affected many government projects, especially the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHA).
“We still have one or two administrative problems and we are solving them regularly to ensure that Taifacare provides universal health care (UHC). We are working hard to ensure that this program is successful.
“We are looking for ways to finance the scheme, for example through the Additional Budget, we can adjust the tender of resources. Even if there is a deficit, we will go out of our way to continue to finance primary health care,” said Kindiki.
According to Kindiki, 17 million Kenyans are now registered under the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) program, which is called Taifa Care.
He added that the government is improving all remaining issues to ensure that hospitals provide services efficiently and on time.
