Drunken Police Officer Releases 13 Suspects Who Were Arrested and Enjoyed Their Homes in the New Year

A Zambian police officer caused a national stir after he allegedly released 13 inmates from custody on New Year's Eve while drunk.

The officer, Inspector Titus Phiri, is said to have acted drunk when he released the suspects from the Leonard Cheelo Police Station in Lusaka, the country's capital.

According to the BBC police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said the officer forcibly took the cell keys from Constable Serah Banda before proceeding to open the men's and women's cells.

He then ordered the suspects to leave while announcing that they are free and asking them to cross over to enter the new year. Of the 15 people in custody, 13 managed to escape.

The inmates were facing charges ranging from assault to extortion and theft, which caused consternation due to the seriousness of the officer's actions.

“Later, Detective Inspector Phiri opened the men's and women's cells and ordered the suspects to leave while saying they were free to cross into the new year, out of the 15 suspects who were under custody, 13 escaped. Following the incident, the soldier ran away. the scene,” said Hamoonga.

Authorities have launched a manhunt for the fugitives, describing their release as a breach of public trust and a threat to public safety.

Meanwhile, Inspector Phiri was later arrested and is currently in custody, awaiting legal proceedings.

The Zambia Police Service has condemned the incident in strong terms, citing its commitment to maintain law and order.

In a statement to the public, the service promised to take strict action against officers found abusing their authority.

“The Zambia Police Service reiterates its commitment to law and order and assures the public that strict action will be taken against any officer found to be abusing his authority or acting in violation of the law,” said the statement.

Similarly, a police officer sent to Kimonio Primary School in Marioshoni location to guard the KCPE exams and KPSEA he was arrested after being found drunk while the exams were going on.

The manager of the station, Elijah Biwott, reported the matter after he failed to see the officer inside the area.

Due to the laxity of security at the center, the Molo Security Force in collaboration with OCS Marioshoni, rushed to the school and found the officer, Joshua Kimathi Milikau, sleeping in the teachers' rooms while he appeared to be drunk.
