- They have lost five of their last six games in the Premier League, which leaves them 14th in the table
- Ruben Amorim has discussed whether his team are in a relegation battle a month after taking over
Manchester United suffered yet another defeat in the Premier League, leaving them in dire straits as the league reaches the halfway stage.
Ruben Amorim's side were beaten 2-0 by Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Sunday, leaving them in 14th place.
The Portuguese coach, who took over from Erik ten Hag last month, said his team could be in a relegation battle.
Is Man United fighting to avoid relegation?
Man United were last relegated from the English Premier League 50 years ago. If things don't change, they could be relegated for the first time in Premier League history.
Last season, they recorded their worst finish in Premier League history, but if things don't improve, it could be even worse this season.
At the halfway point, they are in 14th place with 22 points, they have won six, drawn four and lost nine.
Amorim's side have lost their last four matches and six of their last eight. They have also lost three consecutive home games for the first time since 1979, according to Sky Sports.
Since the Portuguese coach took over last month, he has managed just four wins in 11 games.
Amorim about the threat of relegation
The Red Devils were poor in the first half against Newcastle United, and things could have been worse.
The establishment of Kobbie Mainoo helped the hosts gain control. However, they struggled to make room. Amorim fears his team is in the fight for relegation.
BBC Sport asked the former Sporting CP coach if his team was in a fight to avoid relegation.
“I think that is possible. We have to be open with our fans.”
He was also asked if it was embarrassing to talk about being relegated as Man United coach.
“It's also my fault,” he said. “The team has not improved. It is a bit lost at the moment and it is a shame to be the coach of Manchester United and lose so many games. I think people are tired of the excuses at this club. This club needs a big shock. .”
The Red Devils will need a second half of the season to earn a place in Europe next season.
Why did Amorim release Zirkzee?
TUKO.co.ke previously reported that Amorim explained his reason for resting Joshua Zirkzee in the first half against Newcastle.
The 39-year-old said he was thinking about the team when he sent off Kobbie Mainoo in the 33rd minute.
The Magpies were on top form in the first half and prevented the hosts from gaining any sort of control in the contest.
Mainoo brought control in midfield, but it wasn't enough to help create scoring chances.
