Kenyans are increasingly mourning the death of volleyball star Janet Wanja.
Why Janet Wanja almost died in 2015?
Wanja, who was recently diagnosed with gallbladder cancer, died on Thursday, December 26, while receiving treatment.
According to My Cleveland Clinic, gallbladder cancer, also known as adenocarcinoma, is a rare type of cancer that often has no symptoms or signs in the early stages.
Gallbladder cancer occurs when malignant (cancerous) cells grow inside a person's gallbladder.
The gallbladder is a pear-shaped organ located on the upper right side of your abdomen, just below your liver.

This type of cancer usually starts in the innermost layer of the gallbladder, called the mucosal layer, and spreads outward. It often shows signs or symptoms in the early stages.
The Wanja family asked for financial help and received a lot of support from Kenyans.
Nine years ago, the sportsman experienced the danger of dying.
Wanja said he thought he would die from stomach problems.
“The doctors said I had a bacterial infection in the stomach. At one point, I thought I was going to die. Things were very difficult for me, but I went through the treatment and now I'm fine,” he said.
The illness caused him to miss the 2015 FIVB World Championships.
“It was my most difficult and heartbreaking time. I thank God that I recovered.”
What did Janet Wanja's brother say?
Kevin Kimani, Wanja's brother, thanked everyone who supported their family.
Initially, there was a paybill number to help with medical expenses, but the Kenya Pipeline company came forward and covered all the bills.
Kimani thanked the company, the Kenya Volleyball Federation, the Kenya Olympic Committee, and the Kenya Football Federation for supporting Wanja.
He noted that more details will be released later.
