- Kennedy Maina, a young boy who was shot during an anti-government protest five months ago, has been buried
- The 18-year-old boy was shot in the stomach by police on his way home from school on a day of unrest
- According to post-mortem reports, the young man from Nyeri died due to heavy bleeding and infection in the hospital
A state of mourning prevailed in Unjiru village, Mathira, Nyeri county, as a young boy was buried.
Kennedy Maina, a Form Four student, was buried in an emotional ceremony attended by grieving friends and family.
How old was Maina?
The young boy was allegedly shot in the stomach during protest of anti-government in Karatina.
The 18-year-old boy was on his way home from school when he found himself caught up in the chaotic protests.
“I am very sad because of the accident that deprived Maina of her precious and hopeful life. She was innocent. She was leaving school on her way home. We were always at the hospital looking for treatment after she was shot, but she finally died. I ask the government to investigate this matter and give us justice.
Why would a police officer shoot a little boy wearing a school uniform? It hurts so bad,” said Maina's uncle, David.
When was Maina shot?
Maina, who was shot on July 16, was struggling at the hospital from time to time as medical officers treated his wound.
His death after five months was due to excessive bleeding, which left his family with great grief.
“We are saddened to lose such a young man. His life has been cut short. He had a promising life and big plans ahead of him,” one brother added.
Human rights activist Hussein Khalid said Maina died as an unsung hero, adding that he will ensure the family gets justice.
