- Vihiga Governor Wilberforce Ottichilo faced controversy after announcing the inauguration of the county's new mortuary
- Residents criticized the move as a bad place and questioned the priority of funeral facilities over other important infrastructure
- Many expressed the opinion that the funds would be used to improve health services at the Vihiga County Referral Hospital (VTRH)
Vihiga Governor Wilberforce Ottichilo has sparked a huge debate after announcing the opening of a new mortuary in the county.
The governor, who has been in office for two terms, shared the news on Facebook, hoping to excite the residents.
Ottichilo shared a photo of the new modern funeral home, adding that it was ready for us.
“It's finally ready. Tomorrow we open the doors,” read the post.
Ottichilo's post, however, was criticized as residents accused him of not being given priority by the county administration.
Residents scolded Ottichilo about the mortuary
Many suggested that he start by investing those resources in improving the medical services provided at the Vihiga Teaching and Referral Hospital (VTRH).
Others expressed dissatisfaction comparing the development projects in Vihiga with the efforts being made in other counties.
Denis Avoga:
“So you can't build roads, keep security, ensure good medical services in VTRH, put street lights in cities, but you have the courage to open morgues for us.”
Martin Ikojeri:
“While Kiambu's Wamatangi is upgrading hospitals and ECDE centres, our governor is investing in mortuaries.”
Mageto Jaja:
“Enjoying opening the morgue is not the achievement of life but its loss.”
Jackson Okata:
“Instead of investing in the Vihiga Referral Hospital to improve its services, you are putting money into the construction of a mortuary.”
Although some residents saw the mortuary as an important investment, the general opinion shows a preference for better health services and infrastructure before such projects.
