Nairobi – Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has opened up about his relationship with his predecessor, Rigathi Gachagua.
Why didn't Rigathi Gachagua hand over the office to Kindiki
During an interview with journalists on Thursday, December 19, Kindiki said his relationship with Gachagua is fine and nothing has changed since he assumed the position of deputy president.
“My relationship with former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua is the same as before, they are still good friends, I have no reason to complain,” Kindiki said.
The deputy president revealed that his predecessor did not officially hand over his office after being removed from power through parliamentary impeachment.
Was the process of removing Gachagua flawed?
According to Kindiki, the case to prosecute Gachagua which is ongoing in court may be what prevented him from officially transferring his duties.
“There was no official handover because the former vice president is in court. You wouldn't expect him to hand over the office while he is still in court,” DP said.
Kindiki, who said he has no regrets about taking the position of deputy president, pointed out that the process of impeaching Gachagua was flawless.
“I have no regrets about being in this position (of being the vice president). The process involved three branches of government: Administration, Parliament and the Court. I don't see a problem with the process, and if there is, there is a way to fix it,” Kindiki said.
Will Rigathi Gachagua get justice in the Supreme Court?
At the same time, lawyer Ndegwa Njiru indicated that the former deputy president may not get justice if his impeachment case reaches the Supreme Court.
The lawyer pointed out that in the high court, the balance may weigh on Gachagua considering that Chief Justice Martha Koome, who oversees the court, justified the swearing in of Kindiki, who President William Ruto he recommended him to replace his former deputy.
The lawyer spoke on Saturday, November 2, at a funeral in Kirinyaga, where he accompanied Gachagua.
