Answer: A family mourns the death of their relative, Samuel Kimamo Muchemi, who passed away at the Kiambu police station following his arrest during the Jamhuri Dei celebrations on Thursday, December 12.
How did Muchemi die?
Like many others celebrating Jamhuri Day, Kimamo joined his friend in Muchatha, Kiambu county, for the celebration.
According to the report NTVthe 34-year-old and a friend shared a few beers before parting ways, and were planning to reunite later that evening.
The situation took a tragic turn when Muchemi was involved in an altercation with the chief and police officers. He was reportedly abused and later detained at Muchatha Police Station.
Muchemi, who was reportedly arrested for drunken driving, allegedly died that night while in custody at a police station.
According to the police report, Muchemi died of self-harm while in his cell, a claim that is contested by his family including his brother Daniel Maina.
“He was assaulted by police officers and taken to the police station, within 30 minutes he was found dead. the police,” Maina demanded.
What did Muchemi's autopsy report show?
The autopsy report revealed that Muchemi died from lack of oxygen due to compression of the neck.
He also had bruises on both elbows and suffered head injuries.
Muchemi's family is now seeking justice for their son who died in mysterious circumstances.
“What we want is justice. To know the truth about what happened that caused all these issues,” the dead brother added.
A man from Kirinyaga dies in the police station after being arrested
In a separate case, a family in Kagio was mourning the death of their relative, John Mugendi, who died in police custody at the Kiamaciri Police Station.
Mugendi died after being arrested in connection with the murder of his wife, Catherine Wanjiku.
Mwea Magharibi sub-county Police Commander Rashid Ali said Mugendi allegedly stabbed his wife, Wanjiku before he was arrested on Sunday, November 17.
Ali added that Mugendi was brought to court later, where the police got permission to detain him for more time and facilitate further investigations.
Mugendi was later placed in a cell at the police station, where he was found dead on Tuesday, November 26, the day his wife was being buried.
